Self Care For Crocheters

Self Care For Crocheters

Hello, micro makers! I’ve been having a bit of pain in one of my wrists this week and while I’m taking it easy this week, I thought I would share with you what I’m doing to try and help myself heal so I can get back to crocheting as many hours as I’d like!

Taking breaks frequently

Constantly gripping a crochet hook and thread or yarn is enough to tire out anyone’s hands; make sure you are taking adequate breaks, and stretch our your wrists and shake out your hands when you are on a break. If you are a huncher like me, you should probably stand up and stretch out your back, too! Your body (and your equally tired eyes) will thank you.

Using a playlist to help time your breaks

This is something I only recently started doing. Often I will listen to an audiobook while I crochet, but I discovered if I listen to a playlist of songs and put the crochet down every time a song ends to shake out my hands and wrists for a few seconds, it prevents some of the soreness I might typically feel at the end of a longer crocheting session.

Using a wrist roller

These firm foam cylinders can help you massage the muscles in your wrists and arms, letting your arms relax after crocheting. I just place it longways between my leg and my forearm like this:

and then roll back and forth several times. Repeat on the other arm, and your mini-massage is completed. This is the one I have:

Soaking in the tub

Yep, I’m calling long hot baths “healing for crochet fatigue.” Why not?

BONUS: Playlist for you!

In case you wanted to try my playlist trick, and even if you don’t want to try the trick, I made a one-hour Spotify playlist called “Little Stitches, Big Fun” I wanted to share with you. It’s all over the place genre-wise and a bit eclectic, so…pretty much exactly like me:

Happy (and safe) Stitching (and listening)!
